It's that time again, folks!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 20th and runs through Sunday, August 26th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. The ending to this series was just as good as I remembered! I had lots of time to read on day six, so finishing this book was relatively easy. Gripping, fast-paced, action-packed and fun, I absolutely love the Percy Jackson series and I don't need an Oracle to know that there will be many, many PJO rereads in my future.

I meant to pick up A Gathering of Shadows, I honestly did, but I have been on such a big Percy Jackson kick recently, and I didn't want to make myself fall into another reading slump by picking up a book I wasn't in the mood to read. I am very, very excited to be reading The Last Olympian again as it is probably my favorite book in the series (tied with The Lightning Thief).

▫ Thoughts on the book(s) so far:

I finished Battle of the Labyrinth yesterday! Because I did not remember much of the plot, rereading it was actually like picking it up for the very first time. I very much enjoyed seeing more of the characters and witnessing development and small moments that I had completely forgotten about. On to the fifth and final book!

I also managed to read about sixteen pages of The Lie that Tells a Truth, which is a guide to fiction writing that I have been assigned to read for one of the classes I am taking this term. It's really interesting so far; I hope the advice and exercises continue to give me inspiration going forward!

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

The Battle of the Labyrinth is probably the book I remember the least from in the series, so it is nice to pick it up again and reintroduce myself to the adventures that take place within its pages. I'm so close to the end of rereading the series now, it's crazy. Makes me want to go back and do it over again!

I completed The Titan's Curse on day two, and it was just as good as I remembered! This series will forever have a special place in my heart, and I love going back to read them over and over again. 5/5 stars. It was a very exciting, fast read. Though I had planned to pick up another books after TTC, I ended up picking up the next book in the series, The Battle of the Labyrinth instead.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

▫ Thoughts on the book so far:

I AM IN LOVE. I was a little worried when I got a hundred pages or so in and couldn't really understand what was happening/where the story was going, but now that things are happening and everything has basically been explained, I am very much enjoying this book. It's so tense, action-y and amazing; basically, it's a great story of survival and love and I haven't wanted to put it down at all today. I only have 100-150 pages left to go, and it reads really fast, so I'm hoping to complete it before Bout of Books ends.

Because this story is told through emails and case-files, I had a very difficult time understanding exactly what's been going on in the book before yesterday afternoon. However, I did finally managed to get a relatively good grasp on the plot, my interest has been renewed, and I am now flying through this baby at warp speed (ha). All I want to do is read it, which is a pretty great feeling (particularly after a reading slump). Not sure when I will be able to finish it yet, but I am hoping to at least get it done before Bout of Books ends.

Bout of Books 15: Wrap-up!

Bout of Books 15 is over!! :( Though I did not get much reading done, I am terribly sad at the prospect of having to say goodbye to such a wonderful read-a-thon for another few months!

TBR:

✓ Finish The Wondrous and the Wicked by Page Morgan — Because I was already about halfway through this book when Bout of Books began, this was a fairly easy goal to complete. I adore The Disposessed trilogy and The Wondrous and the Wicked was a great conclusion!

✓ Read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis — This book was less than a hundred pages and took only a few hours to read. I loved it.

x Read Illuminae by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff — Much sadness that I was not able to read this book. I tried - I really did - but I needed to pick up something else for an English class, so Illuminae was pushed to the side. Hopefully I can get to it soon!

An unexpected addition to the TBR...

1. The Fall by Bethany Griffin — I had to read this book for school, so it took priority over any other reading material that I had planned to pick up during Bout of Books. I did not manage to finish reading The Fall before the read-a-thon ended, but I was really enjoying it!

Overall, I didn't do too poorly considering I had a 13.5 hour day of work on Saturday and a Crap-ton of homework to do on Sunday.

2015 was a pretty great reading year, despite the constant reading slumps. Here's to an even better 2016!

Bout of Books 14 Wrap-up

Bout of Books has come to an end and, with it, one of the most successful weeks I've had, reading-wise, all year! I only managed to complete a few books but, overall, I did more reading that I have done in quite some time. This post will be a review of my week. To see my original Progress Post, you can click here.



Day One:

One day one, I continued reading the book that I had been working on in the weeks leading up to Bout of Books: Fire and Flood by Victoria Scott, calling it a night after 97 pages. I also participated in the "Fictional World Travel" challenge.


Day Two:

One day two, I finished reading Fire and Flood and picked up Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes by Rick Riordan, which I had just received in the mail. I read 157 pages in total on day two and participated in the "Book Scavenger Hunt" challenge.


Day Three:

Since Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes is such a big book, I decided to go ahead and pick up The Nightmare Charade by Mindee Arnett on day three, reading 150 pages in total. I also completed the "M.A.S.H." challenge.


Day Four:

Because I had Thursday off from work, I decided to use the day to catch up on some schoolwork and cleaning, only reading about 28 pages in total. I read Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes and The Nightmare Charade on-and-off, completing the "Four Seasons Book Covers" challenge as well.


Day Five:

I continued reading both books on day five, getting through 82 pages and completing the "Character Soulmates" challenge.


Day Six:

On day six, I began and finished reading Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Titans Curse graphic novel in between reading Greek Heroes and The Nightmare Charade. I read 153 pages in total and completed the "Road Trip" challenge.


Day Seven:

Day seven was my most successful reading day, by far. I had another day off of work and used my free time to finally finish The Nightmare Charade by Mindee Arnett, having read 245 pages in total just before Bout of Books ended at midnight. I also participated in the "What to Read Next" challenge.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Overall, I think I did pretty well. Like I said, my reading has not been the greatest this year, so finishing 3.5 books in one week is an accomplishment. Hopefully this will continue! Though I did not set any goals for myself, I am glad that I was able to finish the three books on my TBR and took part in every single challenge that was hosted. I think I fared nicely, considering my TBR reservations. Overall, the week and challenges went pretty well; I managed to keep my page count up and completed six books and three novellas. I did diverge from the original list—picking up Shadow and Bone and the Dream Catcher trilogy instead of If I Stay—but by the end of the week, I did not really feel up to reading anything sad or emotional.
