Bout of Books 17: Day Five!

Bout of Books

» Day Five Recap: «

What I read:

The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

Thoughts on the book so far:

I meant to pick up A Gathering of Shadows, I honestly did, but I have been on such a big Percy Jackson kick recently, and I didn't want to make myself fall into another reading slump by picking up a book I wasn't in the mood to read. I am very, very excited to be reading The Last Olympian again as it is probably my favorite book in the series (tied with The Lightning Thief).

Challenges I participated in:

BoB 14: Character Soulmates

Bout of Books

Today's Bout of Books challenge is "Character Soulmates," hosted by Blue Books and Butterflies! For this, we must play matchmaker; pairing two characters from two separate books/series that we feel would be "Ship-able."

Pair #1:

Tella Holloway (Fire and Flood) + Perry (Under the Never Sky)

Ship Name: Pella

In Fire and Flood, Tella is attracted to Guy; a strong, no-nonsense lover of nature. Perry possesses a lot of the same traits. Plus, he's tall, dark and handsome, which is definitely Tella's type. I can see her following Perry around as he navigates the wilderness, completely entranced with his knowledge of survival. And I think that Perry would enjoy Tella's sarcasm and wit. They are both loyal and protective of the ones they love and would probably get along splendidly.

Pair #2:

Amy Martin (Across the Universe) + Bellamy Blake (The 100)

Ship Name: BellAmy (I did not realize how complicated a Ship name for these two would be when I originally paired them up...)

Bellamy likes a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind (in theory, as the TV show is a better example of this than the actual book), as evidence by his relationship with Clarke Griffin. Amy is very strong, clever and stubborn. Her life has not been easy, and I feel like she and Bellamy would be able to bond over their past experiences and work through them together. They would also challenge one another, which would be funny to watch; I can see many heated arguments, stubborn silences and lovely make-up sessions in their future!

Bout of Books 10: Days four & five

Author: David Levithan
Series: Every Day #1
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Release Date: August 28, 2012
Pages: 322
Format: Paperback
Average Rating: 4.0

Unfortunately, day four did not see much progress, reading-wise. I began Every Day by David Levithan and only made it about thirty pages in before calling it quits and ending the day early. Day five was not much better. However, I did manage to complete one challenge!

Now that I am well-rested and have the entire weekend free for reading, I am hoping to finish Every Day and it's prequel novella, Six Earlier Days, before the end of the read-a-thon.

» Progress...

Began reading Every Day by David Levithan
Read for about 2.5 hours (total = 12)
Read 138 pages (total = 495)
Completed the Rainbow Book Challenge at Neon Yeti Reads

Bout of Books 9.0: Day five

× On day five I was reading....

Author: Myra McEntire
Series: Hourglass #2
Publisher: Egmont USA
Release Date: June 12, 2012
Pages: 325
Format: Hardcover
Average Rating: 3.87

Day five did not go as well as the others. My eyes were killing me (I had pink eye - hastag, teacher probz...), I was sick with an upper respiratory infection, and I just did not feel like reading. Was I upset about this? Absolutely not. Considering how much I have already put in to Bout of Books this week, I figured a day of non-reading was deserved. I did pick up Timepiece, the second book in the Hourglass series by Myra McEntire, during work and read for about an hour, but that was it. I also did not complete any challenges.

× Day Five Progress:

Started reading Timepiece (Hourglass #2) by Myra McEntire
Read for: 1 hour (Total = 17.5)
Read 38 pages (Total = 704)
Completed 0 challenges

. . . .

Two days of reading left; how is that possible? See you tomorrow!

Bout of Books 8.0: Day Five & Six

Day five and six were pretty uneventful reading-wise, so I figured I might as well combine the two into one update.

As you know, I began reading The Jerk Magnet by Melody Carlson on day four of the Read-A-Thon (Thursday) and ended up putting it down later that evening because it was just... God-awful. I picked it back up on Friday (day five) and continued reading on until Saturday (day six); which was when I finally (finally) finished it. Because the main character was so unlikable and the story literally had no point, depth, or substance, I gave this book two stars.

Challenges:

~ Day Five ~

There was only one challenge on day five, and that was Bookish Mad Libs hosted by The Space Between. For this challenge, we were given instructions to pick certain characters, places, or verbs/adjectives that were in a book/series or present in the title. My choices were as follows:

A. The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles #1) by Rick Riordan [place name or type]
B. President Snow (The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins) [villain]
C. The Vile Village (A Series of Unfortunate Events #7) by Lemony Snicket [adjective]
D. A Million Suns (Across the Universe #2) by Beth Revis [number]
E. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien [noun]
F. William Herondale (The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare) [hero/heroine]
G. If you Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff [dessert]

And then we had to insert our choices into a letter. Voila!
Help! I'm being held captive in the Red Pyramid, by President Snow!
It is very vile here!
He is demanding a million rings to set me free!
I have just discovered that William Herondale was captured too!
On second thought, please send cookies, and don't worry if you don't hear from us for awhile!

Much Love,

Samantha
~ Day Six ~

There were two challenges on day six; Bookish Wishes, hosted by Kelsey's Cluttered Bookshelf, and the Acrostic Book Poem by I Read, Ergo I Write. I only participated in challenge one.

Challenge #1 - Bookish Wishes

For this challenge, we were asked to answer one of two questions; if we could be any fictional character, who would it be? And, what book are you dying to read that has not been written yet? I went ahead and answered question one.
If I could be any fictional character, I think that I would probably have to choose Tessa Gray from the Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare. Not only does she end up with two extremely cute boys but she is strong, loyal, funny, intelligent, and extremely courageous. I have admired her character from book one.

And she also gets the boys. Did I mention that already?
I actually won this challenge, so that's pretty exciting! Thanks to Kelsey for asking such fun questions. :)
