I read SO many good books this past year, which made choosing my favorite fourteen extremely difficult. If you would like to see the sister video I posted on my BookTube channel, where I briefly discuss/show each book on this list, click here. If not, I will be starting at book number fourteen and working my way down to one.

Thanksgiving
This year, if I am thankful for anything, I am thankful for family. Up
until recently, I have associated that word with blood but,
unfortunately, it has become increasingly apparent just how skewed that
way of thinking really is. Blood does not make someone love you. It does
not mean that they will not turn on you, given the opportunity, or
attack and blame you for things that have gone wrong. A family is made
up of people that care for you, despite your faults, and do not use
them against you; those that remain by your side even when your back is
turned and do not lie to your face in an attempt to gain something in
return. So, even though the upcoming holidays will be more bitter than
sweet, I am very, very grateful to those that have offered their love,
encouragement and sympathy these last few weeks. To my parents and
siblings, friends, coworkers, members of our church's congregation and
random, long-lost acquaintances that have shown up at our door with
prayers and support: you are all my family and I love you.

Monday Blues
If Friday is my favorite day of the week, then Monday would be my least. Waking up groggy and disoriented—tired no matter how many hours of sleep you received the night before—is never a good start to the week. And yet, that is the vicious cycle of "Monday." Unlike Friday, there are no moments of promised relaxation and quiet to look forward to; no time to sit down and gather your thoughts between one day and the next. There are only yawns and droopy eyelids, long work days and early mornings. Even before I manage to pull myself out of bed, I am longing for the comfort of warm pajamas and a soft blanket once again. Mondays make the week seem endless, the situations more stressful and the headaches more pronounced.
I yearn for Friday.
I yearn for Friday.

October 2014 Wrap-up
(click on the book to be taken to Goodreads)
1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter #4) by J.K. Rowling: Still amazing. Still five stars.
2. The Blood of Olympus (Heroes of Olympus #5) by Rick Riordan: Rating = 4.5 stars. I have to say, I was a little disappointed with this book. Quite a few things were left unanswered and open-ended, and it seemed that things wrapped up a bit too quickly/nicely. Definitely not one of Rick's better books.
3. Weird Things Customers Say in Bookstores by Jen Campbell.
4. The Body Electric by Beth Revis: Rating = 3.5-3.75 stars.
5. Vicious by V.E. Schwab: Disturbing, creepy and so, so good.

Things I am afraid of...
1. Death, losing someone I love
2. Feeling helpless/hopeless
3. Never amounting to anything
4. Getting older
5. Being stagnant or still
6. Never finding someone who will want to love/be with me
7. Commitment
8. Myself
9. My beliefsand the absence of them
Ways to fix them...
1. Death is inevitable. All you can do is cherish every moment that you, and the people you love, are given.
2. Do something about it. Find a way to eliminate those feelings and, if you can't, minimize them.
3. Do not allow things to spiral out of control; work hard the first time around.
4. That is life. Enjoy the years as you have them and do not let one moment go to waste.
5. Do not allow yourself to slow down — keep working toward your goals. Relaxation is one thing; giving up before you have begun is another.
6. Put yourself out there; do not shy away from people just because you are afraid. Love and be loved in return.
7. If you are going to reach your goals, you will have to commit. Put your all into everything that you do. It will pay off, I promise.
8. Everyone has a dark day or two. When those thoughts come, remind yourself of all the good things that surround you — of all the beautiful people that are in your life and the amazing days and memories that are created because of them. Do not let yourself be pulled under; embrace the bad and change it.
9. Take a look at your priorities. What do you believe in? Sort it out now; do not allow yourself to wander around without a guide or destination. You will get lost.

Rain
It's funny how something as simple as weather can affect our mood and how we approach the day. I greet this rain with exhaustion.
I woke up extremely groggy this morning, still trapped in a web of dreams. My movements were slower—robotic—my bones aware of the wet and chill before my eyes saw the truth, lashing against my wizened windowpane. Gliding through my morning routine, I wanted nothing more than to crawl beneath my covers and slip back into a dream-filled sleep. If only...
Everyone else seems to be having the same sort of troubles as I; everywhere I look, people are yawning and eyes are drooping and limbs are yearning for the warmth of home, a blanket, their bed. The gloomy skies do nothing to quell the these desires — they only intensify them. I bundled up as warmly as I could today, but the comfort only makes me want to burrow further; to hibernate until the sun decides to grace us with her presence once again.
Two hours and fifteen minutes to go. Bed, I am coming for you. I look forward to slipping back into your warm embrace.

September 2014 Wrap-up
(click on the book to be taken to Goodreads)
1. Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid: I put off finishing this book for SO long (I think I started it in... July?) It was okay, but I felt like the author was trying to make the book into something deeper than he was capable of or able to pull off (in this particular instance). In my opinion, each character went through a very minimal amount of growth—even Leila, the female lead—and the only character that did develop—Hudson—did it off-screen; we didn't even get to see it! He just swooped in at the end and listed the things he had learned in Leila's absence. It would have been much more interesting had we actually seen the changes for ourselves. Like I said; the book was okay—enjoyable—but it did not leave much of an impact.
2. Born of Illusion by Terri Brown: Actual Rating = 3.75 stars. Very interesting.
3. Percy Jackson & the Olympians; The Lightning Thief (graphic novel) by Rick Riordan.
4. Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard: I have been loving me some historical fiction lately, and combining that particular genre with zombies instantly grabbed my attention. I'm just sorry it took me so long to pick this up! Daniel has definitely found himself a place on my
5. Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Obsidian was the Little Book Club's September pick of the month. I did not seem to enjoy this as much as everyone else on the planet—Daemon was a bit too infuriating and Kat a bit too whiny—but, overall, it was enjoyable.

August 2014 Wrap-up
Alas. Thanks to school and work, I was not able to read as many books as I did in July...
☆☆☆☆
1. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline: As The Little Book Club's "Male Protagonist" pick of the month, I was EXTREMELY excited to dive in (and not just because it was the first time I had ever participated in any sort of "official" book/reading club). Ready Player One was a very fast-paced, action-packed read, and I definitely agree with all of the hype surrounding the story and author. It was a bit difficult to get into at times, though I blame that on my inability to understand anything too tech or Science Fiction-y. This was definitely one of my favorite reads of the year so far.
☆☆☆☆
2. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke: In preparation for the sequel's release, I picked up the first book in the Between duology and loved it just as much the second time around! Tucholke's writing is creepy, suspenseful, gothic and beautiful, and I adored every single one of her characters - Violet in particular.
☆☆☆☆
3. Between the Spark and the Burn (Between #2) by April Genevieve Tucholke: This series is so dark and odd. I love it! Though the ending was not what I was expecting—and originally hoping for—I found myself enjoying it just as much as the first. It was very creepy and I liked seeing Violet's relationships progress from the beginning of book one to the ending of the second. Tucholke has quickly become one of my new favorite authors and I look forward to seeing what else she has in store for her readers.
☆☆☆☆
4. Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss #3) by Stephanie Perkins: While I did not enjoy this book as much as the other two, it was nice to see all of our favorite characters return to the City of Love and reconnect after a year—and a million changes—away. I was all for the quirky, awkward Isla at the beginning of the book, but once she and Josh began dating, she really started to get on my nerves. The ending wrapped up a bit too nicely and seemed a little insincere but, overall, I really enjoyed the conclusion to this wonderful series. I definitely plan on rereading these books sometime soon.
☆☆☆☆☆
5. Percy Jackson's Greek Gods by Rick Riordan: I did not realize just how much I needed this in my life until its release. Greek mythology is extremely difficult to get into—I love all of the stories, but the lengthy, text-filled books are so dull... I can never get past the first few chapters. This book, however, was hilarious and informational and I finished it in about a day. Oh, how I've missed Percy's wit!

July 2014 Wrap-up
July was an AMAZING reading month for me. I managed to get a few books ahead of my Goodread's 2014 book count, participated in the BookTubeAThon and pretty much enjoyed every single book that I picked up. Completing eleven books—and five novellas—is a pretty big deal for me, especially considering how poorly I have been doing recently.
1. The Nightmare Dilemma (Arkwell Academy #2) by Mindee Arnett: The books in this series have SO MUCH potential, but—to me—they seem to fall a little... flat. I am not saying I didn't enjoy this book, because I did, but it is so disappointing when you read an okay book that could be amazing, should the author just delve a little deeper. The thing I found most disappointing was the lack of setting; when I read the synopsis of The Nightmare Affair, I immediately thought these books would be a combination of Harry Potter and the Arthurian legend. However, we did not really see much of Dusty's boarding school and I felt like this was a HUGE missed opportunity. There was also a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth between the main character and her love interest, and quite a few of their interactions were cheesy and hard to read. The plot was unpredictable, however, and I did enjoy a few of the hotter moments between Dusty and Eli. Overall, I am liking this series. I just wish the author would do her idea/the concept justice!
☆☆☆
2. Love & The Zombie Apocalypse by Chelsea Bellingeri: This book was not so good. The writing, plot and characters were a bit juvenile, things happened too fast, there was zero development, editing and grammar mistakes, too many POVs and cheesy interactions. The only thing I really enjoyed about this book was Rachel.
3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer: WHY DID I NOT PICK THIS UP SOONER?! I found the science-y/DNA parts a little confusing, but every single one of the characters were complex and fantastic, the story was exciting and hilarious, and I loved all of the little twists and turns. Meyer took a classic fairytale and twisted it into something deeper and darker; incorporating both small and super important elements of Cinderella into a story that is high-tech and fantastic. I loved it!
☆☆☆☆
4. The Queen's Army (Lunar Chronicles #1.5) by Marissa Meyer.
5. Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer.
☆☆☆☆
6. Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer: Rarely do I ever marathon a series that is not yet complete, but I just couldn't help it!! Cress was not my favorite of the three—it was a bit slower than the others and had a few useless/unneeded chapters—but I could not give it anything less than four stars. Every single one of my favorite characters made an appearance and the writing remained beautiful and hilarious; suspenseful and cute. The ending was worth every heartache and I cannot believe we have such a long wait until Winter! D:
Actual Rating: 4.5
7. Carswell's Guide to Being Lucky (Lunar Chronicles #3.1) by Marissa Meyer.
☆☆☆☆
8. Glitches (Lunar Chronicles #0.5) by Marissa Meyer: It was nice to get a glimpse—however briefly—into Cinder's first years in the Eastern Commonwealth. I sympathized with Adri for about 1.5 seconds before hating her again.
9. The Little Android (Lunar Chronicles #0.6) by Marissa Meyer.
☆☆☆☆
10. Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh.
11. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo: Fact: Everyone seems to love this book. Surely, I would love it too? Yeah, not so much... It was good, but I found it lacking; with it's wishy-washy characters, unnecessary drama and predictability. Also, I found it a tad too slow, a trait that does not work with Fantasy. The action scenes we did get were great—very suspenseful—and the Darkling has a lot of potential but, overall, I was pretty disappointed with this read.
Actual Rating: 3.5-3.75
☆☆☆
12. Don't Close Your Eyes (Wake trilogy bind-up) by Lisa McMann: As the BookTubeAThon neared its end, I found myself struggling to complete the three books in this trilogy; Wake, Fade and Gone. The concept was interesting—being sucked into people's dreams—and I really enjoyed the psychological aspects that McMann incorporated into the story, but there was too much unnecessary drama and back-and-forth between the main character and her love interest. In all honesty, if this trilogy had been condensed into one book (two, max), I probably would have liked it better.
13. The Lovely and the Lost (The Dispossessed #2) by Page Morgan: Looking back, I am not entirely sure why I gave the first book in the series, The Beautiful and the Cursed, three stars. This book was SO. GOOD. I loved all of the characters and there was always something happening; I never knew where the story was going! The writing and language were beautiful and, other than Luc and Ingrid's back-and-forth, I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. Historical Fiction is quickly becoming a favorite genre of mine.
☆☆☆☆
14. Marco's Story (The Dispossessed #1.5) by Page Morgan.

I loved it!

4. The Queen's Army (Lunar Chronicles #1.5) by Marissa Meyer.

5. Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer.

☆☆☆
☆☆☆☆

Teaser Tuesday [July 29]
Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. All you have to do is grab your current read, open to a random page, and share two teaser sentences (that don't give too much away).
This week's teaser:
"I like red—don't get me wrong. But I have a deep appreciation for anything that is willing to be totally and utterly itself. If you're going to be red, well, then, be red, goddammit. From your steering wheel to your hubcaps, be red."
— Let's Get Lost by Adi Alsaid (page 13)
